My family of 6 adults will be in Salzburg at Christmas for 4 days. I am considering 2 day trips and would like opinions; either to St. Gilgen and the ferry to other areas? A trip to Flachau (or somewhere along the train line) to experience more "snow play". My questions are how much is the travel to these areas either by bus or train? Does the Salzburg card help with any travel expense? or the much broader questions of Would it make more sense to possibly stay in one of these area?
I don't like changing locations frequently. I don't know about any boat schedules, or what stays open that time of the year, but worth visiting within an hour or so:
St Gilgen/ Zwolferhorn/Wolfgangsee
Herrenchiemsee and Fraienchiemsee via train to Prien.
Konigssee/ Mount Jenner via bus to Berchtesgaden
Werfen - castle and caves
Kufstein has an attractive centre and a good castle.
Ice cave is not open in Dec.
Salt mines at Hallein will be open. We went on Dec. 26
