We are looking to book an English speaking driver/ tour guide for a day trip from Vienna to Salzburg in late May. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It takes 2 1/2 hours by train from Vienna to Salzburg. If you return to Vienna then it would be about 5 hours of transportation and not worth it to do a day trip to Salzburg. If you plan to stay one or hopefully more nights in Salzburg then it would be doable. Hopefully you can have more time in Salzburg.

I too would want more than half a day in Salzburg. It's just so full of music and attractions to see. We especially love to sit in the beer garden at Augustiner Brewery in Summer and sit inside their beer hall in Winter--for an afternoon.
The local citizens are like a bunch of tour guides if you have any questions or need directions. They're some of the friendliest people you'll ever find.

Day trips are possible, but train is much faster than driving, doing the trip with a driver is a way to make it impossible.

If you are tough you can have 14 hours in Salzburg for visiting. Take the first train from Vienna (5:30am) and the last train back from Salzburg (10pm).

Don't do it. If you must get out of Vienna, a generally bad idea on the face of it, the only OK day trip is Krems/Melk.
