day trip to hallstatt from salzburg using public transportation

while im leaving from salzburg for the day trip, i'd like to arrive at the end of the day at vienna and thus will have my bag with me. I'd like to go to the Dachstein ice cave in the morning, preferably when the funicular opens at 8:40 AM so that way i can make the best of very limited time. Does anyone have experience arriving to Hallstatt from Salzburg using public transportation, specifically with an effort to go to the Dachstein ice cave as early as possible?

from my research it seems like there are two ways to do this using public transportation from salzburg

  1. bus; take 150 bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, 542/543 bus to Dachstein Caves. Looking at bus schedules though, it seems earliest but gets to Dachstein caves would be 9:12 AM. I would then leave my bag at the bag storage at the ice cave to pick up afterward and then take with me into town

  2. take 5:12 train from Salzburg to Obertraun which arrives at 7:34 and then take taxi from there to the funicular. This will involve an early wake up but i can leave my bag at the Attnang-Puchheim station and then pick it up from there on my way to Vienna on the 18:22 train.

Anyone ever try either of these and have any advice? Especially if the train is mandatory to arrive at the funicular by 8:40 or if the bus can pull that off also.

Thanks!

i havent seen that video before but i did visit their website extensively which describes the process similarly. My main thing is I want to be at the Dachstein visitor center at 8:40 and looking over the bus schedules, it seems like the earliest one only arrives at 9:12. From that standpoint I was leaning towards the train even though it's an earlier start time Here is the link where i found the bus info:

I guess what I'm really looking for confirmation that I found the right information and didn't read anything incorrectly because I do sadly have a history of doing that when I travel.

thanks so much fourfinleys, that link was very helpful and confirmed that the earliest bus only arrives at 9:12 and i should take the train. The next question is if anyone knows if there will be taxis available at the Obertraun station or if i should make arrangements with a taxi company in advance (anyone have any recommendations?)

hmm, since the train comes in at around 7:30 and dachstein only opens at 8:40, maybe I should just get off at Hallstatt instead of obertraun, take the ferry across, walk around for half an hour and then take a taxi from the bus stop

thanks for the reply wmt1, i emailed them yesterday at office@ratl.co.at and another company at taxi@hallstatt.net and havent gotten a response yet so i wondered if there is another recommended company. As my previous post said, I'm leaning now to getting off at Hallstatt train station, taking the ferry and then walking to the bus stop where I imagine there must be taxis.
