Day trip out out of Salzburg

We will be spending 5 days in Salzburg and wanted to know if a day trip to Vienna is possible. Thank you in advance for any information.

Not really. You would spend a large chunk of the day traveling to and fro and Vienna deserves several days. Perhaps you could devote a couple of days to Vienna. We have lived in both cities and both are worthy of adequate time.

Agree with previous poster. If you were doing the opposite I would say maybe. Vienna deserves at least 3 full days, although we have NEVER spent less than 10 days there and we have been many times.

Bonnie,

I agree that the others that Vienna is not an ideal day trip from Salzburg, due to the travel times involved. While it may be feasible, it won't allow much time to actually see anything.

As wife and me go every year to Salzburg, every year we consider doing this day trip, and every year we reject the idea. The trip is possible and trains are getting faster so now the day trip would be more feasible. But still too many hours sitting on a train, too few hours in Vienna. It may make sense if you want to visit only a specific exposition, Vienna deserves more if you have never been there.

I noticed in some of your other posts that you are planning to visit Budapest as well. As the train will stop in Vienna on the S'burg-Budapest journey, why not catch an early train out, spend a few hours in Vienna and then continue your journey? It is about 2.5 hours from Vienna to both Budapest and Salzburg, so it you leave early enough and are ok with arriving late, you could do something.

I think we will spend a couple of days in Vienna, after reading your responses. Does anyone have suggestions on a hotel? Thanks again for your advice.

"Does anyone have suggestions on a hotel?"

How many is "we"? What is your budget, in euros ("moderate price" means different things to different people)? Do you have any special wants or needs (elevator, balcony, etc)?

The more specifics you give, the more useful answers you will get.

We always stay at K&T Boardinghouse--one of many good bed and breakfasts.
It's just 1 stop on the subway from The Ring, and in a very busy area. The subway is about 50' from the front door.
Rick Steves used to stay with them when in town.

The OP has not been back here since the 27th, to clarify her question posted on that date.
Tough to give a helpful answer, if the OP doesn't come back to clarify her question.
