The Danube is a very long river travelling through many countries.

Although you posted your question in the Austria Forum all your other threads are about Italy. Are you asking specifically about Austria, or are you considering Bratislava or other non Austrian cities? If exclusively Austria, which city are you considering departing from?

Good question Nigel. This request is very vague.

I would add, however, that cruising out of Vienna isn't really a great idea as the Danube around Vienna tends to be very industrial and boring. A river cruise on the Wachau stretch of the Danube is a much better idea.

We did a trip similar to the one posted above, bus from Vienna to a boat that goes to Melk. It was okay, there were long stretches of the Danube with not much to look at, interspersed with an amazing castle or two. Melk was a sight to see though.

What Emily said. Some decent small cities in the stretch of Danube west of Vienna, but the good stuff is west of Krems. The smart choice is train or rental car to the Wachau/Meik and river cruise from there.
