crowds in Austria/Germany beginning of August

Hi, we have a wedding in Ireland July of 2018 and are thinking of spending a week or so afterwards in Austria and Germany. Curious how crazy busy it is there that time of year. How fast do restaurants fill up? How much in advance do you need to make reservations for hotels, dinner or major attractions.

rough plan: Fly into Munich, visit Mittenwald to Hallstatt to Vienna and fly out of Munich.
appreciate your thoughts! Kathy

Why not fly open-jaw: in to Munich, out of Vienna? Multi-city tickets can be almost the same as round trip, especially since it saves you the time and expense of getting back to Munich.

Crowds should not be a problem, but ultimately it depends how particular you are in choosing the places for staying and dining.

Talking about Vienna, I would book the hotel first to have a larger choice. For sights it is normally not necessary to book in advance. The number of restaurants where you have to make a reservation well in advance is pretty small. Attending a good classical concert or a State Opera performance needs more consideration.

great thanks! don't think open jaw will work as we are driving and i think there are issues with renting a car in one country and returning in another??

The bigger car rental companies are used to one-way rents. Because Germany and Austria are both in the EU the extra costs are not that high.
As an example I checked with Avis: pick up at Munich Airport, car return one week later at Vienna airport is less than €500. This includes already a surcharge of €168 for the one-way rent.

You say August in the header and September in the body of your post. Which is it?
