Will there be more people traveling in area of Austria border, near Oberammergau, since 2020 is a passion play year? Also traveling in Austria and Germany in general in September 2020 because of the play? Thought of flying into Munich. Dislike crowds, have little interest in the play, maybe switch to traveling in Southern Italy if Austria/Germany will be extra busy?

While there is no doubt that the Passion Play attracts a lot of visitors to O'gau, there are not the same huge crowd levels that you would find at something like the Munich Oktoberfest. Consider that the theatre (only) holds 4700 people. You should see very little difference in the usual tourist levels outside that particular town. Certainly not enough to avoid all of Bavaria and the Tyrol.
