Cottageviertel and Hietzinger and Alsergrund

I just left Vienna and really enjoyed visiting tag Alsergrund with its historic architecture and laid back vibe compared to the bustling inner city 1st district.

But also the Cottageviertel really appealed to me. Who knew that Felix Salten wrote Bambi from the neighborhood. It’s a quiet residential area of beautiful free standing homes and villas which starts abruptly north of around Gentzgasse and stretches several blocks from there including ( I believe it’s still in the same district) the lovely Turkenschanz park. It’s quite a contrast to the areas to its south.

Finally I also liked the Hietzinger neighborhood due west of Schonbrunn palace. Here were bigger elegant villas, a few random embassies and interspersed in all of it some newer apartment buildings. A nice mixture really. It was quite an architectural contrast to end up back on the U4 subway line area afterwards.

Vienna certainly offers a rich mixture of architectural styles and examples, which I highly recommend to architecture lovers as well as history enthusiasts.

Never saw that one Emily but I’ve definitely used some of your other posts for ideas. My new theme this trip is elegant or even reasonably nice parks surrounded by elegant neighborhoods. So Cottageviertel and Turkenschanz certainly fit the bill. Also the little park to its northeast.
