Concert Venues and Concert Attire for Vienna and Salzburg?

We have booked the 8 Day Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna tour for October 21, and we hope to attend a classical concert in both Salzburg and Vienna.
Can anyone who has been on this trip recommend venues/concerts
that have worked out well for both location and times given the schedule of free time in these two cities?

Also, with luggage size limits :-), please advise if a shirt and tie without a jacket would be appropriate enough attire for my husband? And are women expected to wear dresses for these evening concerts, or simply dress up a pants outfit? I've never been to these cities and I would love to know what has been observed during anyone's recent tour attending concerts in these cities. Thanks!

I haven’t been on the Munich/Salzburg/Vienna tour, but am traveling to Vienna, Salzburg and Nürnberg in late fall and already have tickets for the Vienna Opera and a Salzburg Advent concert. I am not packing special clothes for either concert. Suits and ties are not required and neither are dresses. While you will undoubtedly see people in dressy clothes, you will be fine in the dressier of your travel attire. Personally, I wouldn’t wear jeans and a tee shirt, but anything nicer than that will be fine.

As soon as you hear about possible free time, I would advise you to see about tickets, as tickets for non-touristy concerts can be difficult to obtain. I had to go on a wait list for a couple of weeks before being assured of tickets for LaBohème in Vienna.

When we went to Vienna in October-November 2015, we enjoyed an unforgettable evening at the Opera. I regret that we did not splurge for more expensive tickets - the music was sublime, but we only saw half the stage from the next-to-the-cheapest seats.

I don't think anybody is going to care what you wear. When we were there, the people in formal attire looked a little weird - I have to say. Most of the people I saw were wearing "business casual". I wore black jeans and my nicest top. My husband wore his best shirt. We did nothing to draw attention to ourselves - like 99.9% of the people in attendance. We didn't feel uncomfortable. It was the next to the last night of our trip, and I didn't want to lug around formal attire for one night.

I think your husband's shirt and tie and your dressed up pants outfit should be fine.

You might want to go to Google Images and search for the name of the theater and "interior" With some luck you will get photos from a concert and see how people are dressed. I go to the Opera often in a nearby city and I am always reading accounts that dont match what i see when i go. I've even done head counts and counted ties and coats....

I went two years ago to Salzburg and Vienna on the GAS tour. I stayed for four more days in Vienna. I attended two concerts in Vienna and an opera and in Salzburg a dinner concert. I really would not worry about it. No jeans and sneakers but a shirt and slacks for a man is fine, no tie is really needed but if he wants to wear a tie that is fine. No jacket is needed unless you are bringing it anyway.

As for a woman, dress pants and a nice blouse is fine. I wear black dress pants and a dressy blouse and flat black shoes. Most everyone attending are tourists at a lot of the concerts and venues. However, when I went to the opera outside the city center there were not tourists but again, wearing dress pants and a nice blouse was fine.

I am going on the 8 day Munich, Salzburg, Vienna tour in September as I loved the GAS tour and enjoyed all three cities. I will be attending a concert in Vienna again this year and intend to wear the same black dress pants and a nice blouse.

I also will wear the same outfit when I attend a play in London before this tour.

Have a great time. Wonderful cities!

Thanks so much for the replies. The suggestion to book ahead is helpful. Do most people on these tours just look at the itinerary and buy tickets online that would seem to work within the tour description, or will the tour director be providing some options for a group to travel to one of the concerts? We have been on other tours and there were group options that made it easy for us to have the transportation to the concerts provided as a tour option. Having never been on a RS tour, we just are double checking before we book online. Thanks again, everyone for taking the time to give us information regarding venues and attire. That was very helpful and appreciated

I have been on the GAS tour so we did the same cities as the 8 day tour and I am going on the 8 day tour later this summer. I loved the GAS tour and so I decided to go back and do the 8 day tour.

If you are not spending extra days in Vienna then I truly don't believe you would have time to go to a concert on day 6. You will be arriving late in Vienna and you will be taking an walk with the tour guide and then dinner on your own. You may be able to squeeze it in and choose a concert that starts about 9PM. You may not want to book a concert before you go to Vienna but if you are set upon going to a concert then the guide or hotel may be able to help you buy tickets. I would suggest checking the churches that have concerts. Concerts in churches in Europe are very good and no matter where you sit in a concert you have a good seat. You are there to listen to the music and don't need the front rows.

I am just afraid that after a long day of travel to get to Vienna, the Melk stop and the , walking tour of the city and checking into the hotel and having dinner it would be tiring and also no time for a concert.

Day 7 in Vienna is the last night and the farewell dinner and that you don't want to miss.

Now Salzburg is different. Day 3 is a group dinner so again, no concert that night. But day 4 as the tour says, you could go to a concert that night. You can call the RS office and ask if the guide helps you buy a ticket or offers you an option. On the GAS tour the guide offered us an option and we paid him to buy us a tkt for a dinner concert. One tour member did not go and he bought a tkt to hear a concert at the fortress which I think would be pretty cool.

The above is my opinion and my experience being on the GAS tour and being on 15 RS tours. I hope this helps.

Have a great trip. I will be back before you go if you want to PM me about the tour.

Best,
Ann

You did not say at what time of the year you will be in Vienna. The concert schedules depend on that, so it is difficult to advise.

wmt1 Yes it was said when they will be in Vienna and Salzburg, the tour is for October 21 so the concerts would be that week. Vienna has concerts all year round.

I have read that October 21 seems to the starting date, but that does not say when you are at what city.

I got the impression that most posters in this blog seem exactly to know what the "8 Day Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna tour" is about schedulewise.

Just returned from the GAS tour yesterday. While in Salzburg, our tour guide made arrangements for us to attend (at our expense) a Mozart Dinner Concert in St. Peter's monastery cellar (possibly the oldest restaurant in the world). Except for one couple who had made other plans in advance, the whole group attended. Now, RS tours are casual, and I never bring dress clothes, although I pack some collared shirts so I don't have to go around in T-shirts all the time. This dress was perfectly acceptable, although some of the diners were dressed nicer.

Remember your taking the 8 day tour and not the GAS tour so I still suggest you call the office to find out if the guide will offer for you tkts at your expense to see a dinner concert in Salzburg. One they do on one tour is not necessary done on a different tour, even if it is in the same cities.
