Concert options in Vienna

Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to Vienna in late March. We'd like to see a concert in one of the city's impressive music venues. We like classical music but aren't aficionados, so we don't want to break the bank on tickets. And we're not looking to do the tourist concerts with period costumes. Here are the options I'm debating, but would love some insight into what we might expect from each one:

  • Vivaldi and Mozart by Schlosscapelle at Musikverien
  • Philharmonic Brass at Wiener Konzerthaus
  • Hagen Quartet at Wiener Konzerthaus
  • Royal Stockholm at Wiener Konzerthaus

Also, given that some of these concerts start at 7:30 or 8 p.m., we'd like to eat before. What would be a good (safe) time for dinner, assuming we were looking at a restaurant close by the venue?

And one more question, what are bag policies for these venues? Would I be able to bring in a small purse?

Thank you so much for all your help!

After saying that I believe all of these concerts will be very good, the Musikverien is such a special venue that it would be my first choice. I don't think a small purse would be any problem.

The service in restaurants and the dining itself have a much slower pace in Austria. (Lots of US tourists are complaining about that, unable to understand the local attitude.)

Therefore I would make a reservation for dinner 2 hours prior to your concert, if the restaurant is within 15 minutes of walking to the concert venue. It is advisable to tell the waiter/waitress upfront that you have concert tickets for a certain time.

I agree with Janet. The Musikverein is an amazing venue. I would go for a performance there.

I would also recommend a full orchestral program at The Musikverein . It is arguably one of the finest concert halls worldwide . The acoustics ( and the interior design , as well ) are magnificent . The architects who designed Boston Symphony Hall used the Musikverein as their model to achieve the acoustical perfection that The Boston venue possesses .Here is a link to the Musikverein and you can peruse the programs to hand for March. Since your indication is that your level of musical comprehension is modest , I would advise you to audition some of the selections , ( Youtube is a good source ) before buying tickets . Some of the programs may be too advanced for your tastes , and a program you would enjoy is paramount to the experience of a visit to the Musikverein . https://www.musikverein.at/spielplan/

On the very last night of a 6 week trip we attended the Musikverein to hear the Vienna Philharmonic play Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World". It was one of the best performances we've ever heard and as mentioned by others the acoustics are wonderful.

We were fortunate to score tickets to the Vienna Philharmonic at Musikverien. I carried my crossbody travel purse, which isn’t even small (Tom Bihn Medium Cafe Bag) and had no issues. I don’t remember if they had any security looking at bags or anything like that. This was in 2023.

I agree that Musikverien is a special place and I would recommend seeing a performance there if you can!
