I will be traveling to Salzburg for 2 nights with four older teens (17/19) the end of June. I am interested in getting insight into our itinerary ideas so I can try to make some solid decisions.
We arrive at 10:00 am into Munich from the US. Our plan is to take the train to Salzburg (from the research I have done this seems to be the fastest option?). If everything goes well, I assume we should be in Salzburg by 2:00 pm. Would this be realistic?
Day 1 (afternoon arrival)
- Tour of Old Town Salzburg including the Fortress
- Dinner and off to bed I assume. We are staying near Mirabell Garden so we might tour this if we are still awake.
Day 2
- Train to Berchtesgaden for private tour of Eagles Nest (8:30am-12:30pm)
- Return to Salzburg by 2:00 pm - Continue to visit sites/possibly visit Hellbrunn and Trick Fountains
Day 3 (we need to return to Munich by evening as our hotel is reserved for this night)
- This day is causing my issues - we have several options, all by private car.
- Eagles Nest (delete from day 2 and spend all of day 2 in Salzburg), Salt Mine, visit Berchtesgaden, possibly Hanger 7, Luge
- Werfen area to Ice Caves, Salt Mine and Luge in Hallein and Hohenwerfen Fortress
- Hallstatt area for Dachstein Ice Caves, Salt Mine and tour of town (I think this option might be too far)
We will see a lot historical sites during our trip to Europe so I am trying to throw in some nature/adventure activities into the itinerary. My family is interested in all of these options, I am just trying to get some more expert opinions on what is realistic for our time and which of the activities are things that most young adults would really like to see/do.
I have not added in Herrenchiemsee Palace as an option since we will be doing a trip to Neuschwantstein and Linderholm from Munich and thought that might be enough of King Ludwig's creations for one trip.
I appreciate any insight you have.
