City passes for Vienna and Salzburg

I have heard there are city passes that allow you entrance to some sights and free travel on buses and trams.
If this is the case, are they a great way to go?

The city passes are okay, but they're not necessarily inexpensive. Many times, those with city passes don't get their money's worth because they don't take in so many travel sights on the list taking the passes.

You can also just buy day passes on the trams and local transportation. Salzburg is not too large to just walk to most popular travel sights if you stay in the center city.

I was in Salzburg last month and found the Salzburg Card to be a good value. You need to research it prior to travel to see if it will cover the sights you want to visit.

At least speaking for Vienna, I would not buy a City Pass. You must be very tough and have a tight schedule for visiting so many sights to have the pass pay off its costs. For me this would not be fun. I love to go my own pace, stay long where it is interesting, having breaks, enjoy my day.

I recommend buying a pass for public transport. Best is the newly introduced 7-days flexible pass for €17.10, which allows you to define the start of validity. Caveat: It is only available via the "WienMobil" app and requires the creation of an account.

The 72-hours pass targeted at tourists costs also €17.10, but it can be bought at ticket vending machines in subway or train stations, but not inside a tram.
