We may be able to be in Vienna on the first day of the Christmas market this year. . . is this a great market compared to others? we have never been to any, but if it is just so-so, we will spend our time elsewhere. thank you!

I have not visited the Vienna market, but I have countless others. What usually makes a market stand out, to me, is the overall setting, atmosphere (particularly if you know people there), and if the food is any different from the usual grilled meats. With very few exceptions, the merchandise is mostly the same rather cheap stuff everywhere.

I can easily say that I've never visited a Weihnachtsmarkt that I didn't enjoy. But some are definately better than others. Whether or not Vienna's is worth traveling far to see, I couldn't judge. But if you're there anyway, why not give it try? Particularly at night, when most other attractions are closed anyway. It's not like you have anything to lose in taking at least a quick look.

Just to further clarify that Vienna has dozens of Christmas Markets, not just one. The one in front of the Rathaus is probably considered the "main" one, but it is by far the most tacky, most crowded and least interesting of them all (in my opinion). I prefer to visit it from a good distance as the lights look pretty from afar.

For charm, crafts and better food, I would recommend the market at Karlsplatz, the one at the Altes AKH or the one at Schonbrunn. The ones at Freyung and Spitteberg are also good.
