Any suggestions for an itinerary to visit Christmas markets in Munich, Vienna and Salzburg? We’d like to go for 2 weeks, but also include tourist attractions in each city.
Not sure exactly what you are looking for. Where are you flying from? I would fly open and jaw, and I suggest pricing out airfares flying into Munich or Vienna and flying out of Munich or Vienna. You can do this trip by train. I'd put Salzburg in the middle. Rick Steves guidebooks would give you the top attractions in each city and a walking tour for each city. There are possible daytrips from each city, so I'd look at the attractions in each city you are interested in and also if there are daytrips of interest and then assign the number of days you need for each city.
You might have a look at the tour for these 3 cities to give you some ideas.

I used this tour a few years ago in early December to see Christmas markets and enjoy sites in the cities.
Also, is this for next year?
Thank you for your replies.
Yes, I’m planning for Nov/Dec 2026.
We’re flying from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Oh good, you have plenty of time to plan. Your cities are fun and will be gorgeous at Christmas time.
Travelling between the three cities might get tricky if you plan on doing it with public transport. Trains can get expensive quickly, and travel at times that are not ideal for you.
Especially for the route Vienna - Salzburg - Munich this is not true, being the busiest in Austria. Departing from both Wien West and Wien Hbf, there is a direct express train to Salzburg every half an hour from both train stations. Having 60+ connections per day should it make possible to find a train at a time convenient for you.
I recently did that route as part of my Christmas Markets trip. Very easy by train. Vienna to Salzburg was a direct 2.5 hours, and Salzburg to Munich was at out less than 2 hours direct.
Jean, some small possibility thst one of tge responses had an employment bias, or not. I like Daytrip.com because its so easy and you can make stops. But not much interests me to stop for in November on this route. I suspect the Daytrip cost would be around 500 euro while OBB advance purchase discount tickets maybe 100 euro for two people.
Oh, the plan for 16 days.
Saturday, 1 depart, 2 arrive Munich 3 and 4 Munich. 5 train to Salzburg, 6 and 7 Salzburg. 8 train to Vienna, 9 and 10 and 11 Vienna. Wednesday, 12 fly home.
Wait, that's ony 12 days? 4 are left. I gave you my estimation of the minimum that makes stopping worth while. Do you study and pick where the last 4 days go. Some will add a few days to Vienna and maybe see Melk or Bratislava, some will like the perceived atmosphere of Salzburg and add a day or two. Some will use the time for another large city (cant imagine which one). Its all great but only you know your interests.
