Christmas Market Itinerary 2025

We are establishing an itinerary to experience an alpine winter in Bavaria, Austria, and Switzerland with a few forays into Christmas markets for 2025. We are more interested in the cultural ambiance (music, food, artisans) of the markets than with making a lot of purchases. We've decided to kill two birds with ... on this trip with a dip into Switzerland to ride both the Bernina and Glacier Express in the wintertime. So, we've come up with the following itinerary with all ground transportation by train/bus. We would appreciate any input regarding travel arrangements, lodging, must see/do experiences, etc.

Thanks ahead of time for those who can contribute.

Day 1 Munich or Frankfurt to Regensberg - 3 nights with a day trip to Nuremberg (we've been in this area before, so this is just to visit the markets)
Day 4 Salzburg - 2 nights. This is planned for a Thursday and Friday so that we can get tickets for one or more of the weekend advent performances.
Day 6 St. Wolfgang/St. Gilgen - Sat/Sun
Day 8 from Salzburg to Chur
Day 9 round trip on Bernina Express
Day 10 Glacier Express to Zermatt
Day 11 Zermatt
Day 12 Zermatt to either Zurich or Geneva
Day 13 return to US

We did a Christmas Market trip on December 2022. We were in Munich for 5 nights and Salzburg for 2 nights. We had been to both before, but wow, they are just beautiful during the holidays!

In Munich, we stayed at the Hotel Lux, which is very close to Marionplatz. LOVED it!!! Excellent location, quiet, our triple room had 3 real beds, plenty of room for 3 women and luggage, and the breakfast, omg the breakfast, sooo good! Cooked to order and the manager is so nice. Great cappuccino's as well. Then at night, that room is a restaurant/cocktail bar. We did not eat dinner there, but the cocktails were great and it has a really nice feel to it all.

The other hotel we stayed at there, as well as on a prior trip, is the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. Again a great location, quiet, very spacious triple room with 3 real beds, and the staff is so kind. Breakfast is a bit run of the mill here, but it suffices.

In Salzburg we stayed at the Alstadt Hotel Weisse Taube. The location was ideal as it was just around the corner from the markets, but very quiet. Again our triple room had 3 real beds and plenty of room, and a very spacious bathroom. The entry to the room was very spacious and well thought out for luggage, hanging coats etc. We did not have breakfast there, but we adored everything about this hotel and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

My daughter and I travelled to many Christmas markets in late November/ early December in 2024 - an adventure of a lifetime. We thoroughly enjoyed all the Christmas markets we visited but one in particular stands out.The Romantic Christmas market at Schloss Thurn and Taxis in Regensburg (Germany) was pure magic!
