Any suggestions for special things to do ? We plan to be in Salzburg the week of Christmas, Innsbruck (or someplace else) Dec 26-29 and Vienna through early January. Last fall we found restaurants in Salzburg and Vienna were largely closed on Sundays, so what are our eating options for holidays?
And am I correct that Hallstatt and other lakeside locations are pretty much shuttered for the winter ?
Thanks!
I was in Kitzbuhl last Christmas/New Year, smaller town than Innsbruck, and several restaurants were open. Christmas markets should be open as well. Museums and many shops were closed on the holiday and had shorter hours on the Eve.
We traveled by train to Fibetbrunn (Kitzbühel district of the Tyrol) from Salzburg this past January. Our route took us by a large lake at the base of an Alpine ski area that seemed busy. On the other hand, the summer lake resorts we drove through on the Sounds of Music tour were very subdued except for the shop that I got my yodeling marmot.
Fiberbrunn is one of five villages in the PillerseeTal area. The lake was more or less frozen but the ski areas, cross country ski trails and winter walking trails all active. So head for the hills. Find snow and you will find people. That said, the shops seem to close for two or three hours midday.
