Help in choosing among these hotels

Hi everyone,

I've currently narrowed down our hotel choices to the following, in terms of location and budget. I am confused as to stay near the opera or the area around St. Stephen's Cathedral. The reviews about all three are also mixed.
I'm choosing among these three:
1) Pertschy Palais Hotel - Euro 558.90 (family room for four with breakfast x 3 nights)
2) Motel One - Euro 756. (2 double rooms with breakfast x 3 nights)
3) Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth - Euro 810. (family room for four with breakfast x 3 nights)

Pertschy Palais and Kaiserin are close to each other. Motel One is on the other side. If anyone has any inputs or comments. We are looking at a central location with a budget of around Euro 250 to 300/night/four pax.

For Salzburg, couldn't decide between these two:
1) Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Salzburg - Euro 394. quad room for four with breakfast x 2 nights
2) Alstadthotel Weisse Taube - Euro 576 (2 double rooms with breakfast for 2 nights)

I couldn't decide because both seem to have good locations. Hotel Vier is near Mirabelle Gardens and the train station while Weisse is also near the other attractions.

Appreciate all your help. Much thanks!

We stayed at the Weisse Taube a few years ago and thought the location was perfect. In the Altstadt and very close to the Domplatz. Restaurants etc. just outside the hotel door. Our room was comfortable, the breakfast was nice and served in a small but pleasant area, and the owner very kindly spent close to an hour on his cellphone trying to untangle a future reservation problem in our next destination. From the train station, we took the tram to the Mozartbridge stop and walked perhaps 5 minutes to the hotel.

Don't be so concerned about the location of your Vienna hotels. The area you are looking at is very small - it takes 7 minutes to walk from Stephansplatz to the Opera. I'd go with the nicest one - #3. Don't you have any other options? With your price range you should.

I stayed at Le Meridien on Operngasse, a block down from the Opera and really, anywhere along the Ringstrasse or within its perimeter will be perfect for sight-seeing, Vienna is very compact and there's a metro or tram/bus stop every block or so.

In Sept, our niece reserved Pertschy Palais Hotel in Vienna (we were in Hotel Am Stephansplatz directly across from St. Stephens). It's a good location on a fairly quiet street.

We also stayed at Alstadthotel Weisse Taube in Salzburg. Our room was tiny, but we were there because of the location. We faced the street which had students walking down the street at night, but with the windows closed were fine. Breakfast was nice with a good selection. I appreciated that even though I had reserved through Expedia or Booking.com (don't remember which for this one), the hotel sent me a nice e-mail ahead of time with some recommendations. I'd planned that we would just take the bus from the train station, but their info told me the taxi would only be about 10E which was much more convenient for not much more money. When we were in Salzburg 12 years ago, we stayed near the Mirabell neighborhood. We really enjoyed being close to the cathedral, etc. at Alstadthotel Weisse Taube. But, you walk a lot during trips anyway, so probably the preference for you would be if you want the quad room or the 2 double rooms.

Thanks Denny, have heard many good reviews about Weiss, would definitely put it on my list.

Thanks Emily for the reminder, you know, I was so fixated at looking at the area around St. Stephen and really couldn't find anything to my liking but after you pointed that out. I realized I have quite a number of choices. I am currently looking at the area around Naschmkt because I love food markets.

Yes christa, thank you for always answering my questions, I've heard great reviews about the Meridien but unfortunately it's out of our budget right now but Ringstrasse area is also part of our choices.

Thanks Jean for sharing your experience. We are choosing between the area around Mirabell and the other side. Of course, our primary consideration is to be nearer the attractions so less walking for my mom or less pushing for us when she gets tired and want to ride her wheelchair.

If you really like food markets, then you must visit the Brunnenmarkt at Yppenplatz in the 16th district and the Karmelitermarkt in the 2nd district. There are true markets (as opposed to the touristy Naschmarkt) where you will find excellent stalls with local produce and great cafes.

We recently stayed in this hotel, which is located right next to the famous opera house in Vienna and thus within walking distance from the St. Stephen's cathedral. It was a great pick and as a family we had lots of space in the apartments.

Best regards,
Dominik
