I always stay at K&T Boardinghouse when we visit Vienna. The rooms are huge and impeccably clean. They're just one underground stop outside The Ring, and you can be in the center of things in 5 minutes. The underground entrance is 50 feet--across the street. And the rooms are 79 Euros last time I looked--very reasonable. It's also within a few blocks of the Westbahnhof (train station.)

We enjoy and like the location of the Pension Nossek right on Graben.

My favorite neighborhoods are Mariahilf and Neubaugasse. Both are right off the Mariahilferstrasse, and have plentiful dining options, as well as close proximity to the U-Bahn.

Friends from New Hampshire stayed in this place:

The apartment was spacious, very quiet, immaculately clean, and well equipped.

A trolley stop (four lines) is at the corner of the block, i.e. less than 10 minutes to ride to the historic center or to other sights, as well as to the main train station or the airport. Public transport is excellent in Vienna, rather easy to deal with.

I'm with David if your budget permits. There is no substitute for being the the inner city and surrounded by the history, cafes, shops, restaurants, and ambience.

I stay in the Mariahilferstrasse and Neubaugasse area, ie, a couple of blocks from Westbahnhof, works out just fine and is most convenient with several tram lines, and the U-3 and U-6 lines at the same station, direct shots to Schönbrunn, Zentralfriedhof, Staatsoper, Kärntnerstrasse, the Albertina, the Army Museum (HGM), Wein Hbf, etc.

Hi Emily and Fred,

We're looking into an Airbnb in the City Center - is that near the Mariahilferstrasse and/or Neubagasse areas?

Thanks so much!

@ Shelley....If you want the city center, try Kärntner Strasse, Karlsplatz or Stephansdom. Mariahilferstrasse and Neubaugasse both of which intersect are farther out from the Center. Both streets are on the subway U-3 line. Going into the center from Westbahnhof (zip code 1070) or Neubaugasse, you would take the U-3 getting off at the "Staatsoper" station, then take any of the exits Kärntnerstrasse, Am Graben, Stephansdom. I can't help you out with specific apt locations since that I don't use that option.

Mariahilferstraße and Neubaugasse are in the 6th and 7th city borough, much further away from the center than the apartment I mentioned in my previous post. My friends had chosen it not ony because of the outstanding reviews, but because of the excellent connection to public transport. You can go in a few minutes to the city center, to the main train station, and less than half an hour to the airport. My friends even strolled once along Wiedner Hauptstraße - the main street in the 4th and 5th city borough - to Karlsplatz and the State Opera.

There is no 'Staatsoper' station on the U3. That line goes to Stephansplatz, though. Perhaps that is what is meant here.
The closest Ubahn station to the Staatsoper is Karlsplatz, served by the U1, U2 and U4 lines.

Shelley, the distances are not great--the center of Vienna is quite compact. And transit service is very frequent.

sorry...I meant the U-3 station "Stephansplatz." I just know it when I'm there

To explore Vienna efficiently it is more important to be at place with good public transport connections than being close to the center.

Public transport (trolleys, subway, busses, trains) is excellent and safe in Vienna, but most Americans are used to go by car all the time and therefore reluctant to use public transport. They try to stay as close as possible to the main sights and do everything by walking.
