Cheese tasting in Vienna?

I know more about wine than I know about cheese. My total wine experience is Mogan David, Mad Dog 20-20 and then on special occasions, I went for Mateus. So where does that put my cheese "expertise"? It isn't that I don't like cheese, I do. I just have very little experience with cheese after Muenster, American and Cheddar.

I will be in Vienna, Krakow and Budapest this December and would like to try their cheeses, but to just walk into a cheese shop and get one or two would be like throwing a dart at a world map blindfolded to pick out a location for my next trip. Does anyone know of a place in Vienna (or Krakow or Budapest) to do a cheese tasting?

I like to try local cheeses too. But a busy shop may not have time to provide that kind of education, especially in English. In my experience the first and most significant question a cheesemonger will ask, is "what do you like?" So if you cant answer that, then its just fishing, Hard or soft, creamy or crumbly, mild or stinky, goat, sheep or cow. I think it would help to maybe do some research online to identify local varieties before you go.

I do remember one store in Kraków near the old market, called Krakówski Kredens, that sold a lot of regional specialties (sausages and meats) who I'm guessing may have cheeses as well. And I recall that the cheese made in the mountains near there (Zakopane area) is a smoked sheep cheese called Oscypek. oscypek cheese
