charming Viennese coffee houses?

I will have a few days in Vienna. Would love to find some charming coffee houses and a place for a drink with a view. Thanks!

"Charming"? I found a few interesting, but not exactly charming. It's a regional custom and I found other cities with more memorable historic coffee houses than Vienna has remaining .... or maybe I just missed the good ones.

Hi,

In Vienna you try Cafe Sacher in the direction of the Staatsoper (State Opera House). Admittedly, Sacher is often tourist-swamped, but it is possible to be there without the crowds.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude with the charming comment. My enjoyment of the coffee houses of the region is the history. I am one of those people who love to “touch” history. There was no greater reward than walking across the threshold of the Roman Senate.

Anyway, I agree with Fred, the Sacher is a good place to start, but not because it’s charming because it really isn’t, but because of the great history. http://www.famoushotels.org/article/602 , http://www.cosmopolis.ch/travel/vienna/hotel_sacher_vienna.htm

Even the Sacher Torte has a checkered history that is interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachertorte I tried one when I was there……….again, to be part of the history. Not impressed, but they do make over 300,000 a year so you might expect that maybe when they were being handmade they were better.

So the Sacher is a great choice, but not too charming, and now franchised?: http://www.sacher.com/sacher-cafes/sacher-cafe-vienna/

A lot of the coffee houses were the height of opulence and those are the ones that I find most remarkable. This one just drips with opulence, and while it isn’t in Vienna I would bet there are comparable in Vienna: http://www.moveoneinc.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Caf%C3%A9-New-York-Budapest.jpg
