You can take a train, leaving at 4:24 pm and getting to Venezia Mestre at 7:53 pm. Then a bus from the station to the airport.

There is also a train leaving at 7:29 pm from Villach, not too far away, that gets to Venice S. Lucia at 23:45. That is probably too late to get a bus to the airport.

Are you planning on spending the night at a hotel near the airport and taking flight in the morning?

Thanks Sam! Yes, we have a reservation at the Marriott Courtyard close to the airport for the night of the 17th. Our flight home is the morning of the 18th. Do you think that we would be able to get a taxi from the station to the hotel at that time of night? If you don't mind, would you send me the link for the train from Villach and Veldon? One little problem is that you are traveling just after the Italian train schedules will be readjusted on June 10, so you can't see anything official now. I used Sunday, June 3 to see the schedule, since they usually do not change much, if at all.

The first train is an OEBB (Austrian National Railway) Regional Express train to Udine, Italy, then changing to an Italian Regionale to Venice. It arrives at Mestre at 11:44 pm. Yes, you should be able to get a taxi from there to the Marriott.
