car rental or train trip to hallstat and surrounding areas

Dear all,

I planning a trip to HallStat and surrounding areas of salzburg. We are two adults and a four year old child.

I read somewhere on the net that on the way to Hall Stat from Salzburg, one can visit other scenic stop-overs, e.g. the pretty hill-side town of St Gilgen with its cute cable car up the local hill and lovely historical centre, or the charming lake-side town of St Wolfgang with its original Alpine architecture and its unique mountain train and the possibility of taking a boat trip on the lake, or the beautiful spa town of Bad Ischl with its lovely promenade with small shops and cafés and the royal house museum, or the magnificent mountain-top lake of Gosausee with breathtaking views of the highest peaks of the area and the charming guest house.

Now I want to know what would be a better option to see these places in terms of costs/convenience.
A train/bus trip or a car rental ?
Also would the train or bus stop at each of these places.
Obviously with a car rental i would be able to stop anywhere on the way to Hall Stat.

Regards,
Subash

How much time do you have allocated?
All of this is doable using public transport, but not in one day, especially not with a toddler.

Bus line #150 runs from Salzburg to St. Gilgen and further to Bad Ischl. From Bad Ischl you have a train connection to Hallstatt.
From St. Gilgen you have a ferry to St. Wolfgang (and back).

How much time are you allowing for this trip?

If it's just one day as a side-trip from Salzburg, I'd use public transport and probably skip extra stops. In general, Rick's philosophy is to visit one good example of a thing versus multiple similar destinations. If you see Hallstatt first and are ready to leave, then you can decide whether you want another stop on the return route.

Of course, if you're still considering a multi-day farm stay near Werfen, then a rental car makes sense for that period.
