Car or Train/Vienna to Salzburg to Munich

Looking for advice regarding how to spend 5 days. Should we train from Vienna to Salzburg & then on to Munich or would you recommend renting a car, enabling us to visit other towns. Are there any interesting small towns along the way that would make it worth renting a car? We will be traveling with two children, both of whom still require car seats.

steph,

I'd recommend travel by train as it will be much easier, especially with two car-seat-age children. Taking the train will allow you to all enjoy the scenery, and no concerns about finding or paying for parking in Salzburg. If you have time to stop in Hallstatt for a night or two on the way, that's also easily done by train (one change at Attnang-Pucheim and then a short boat ride). It's one of the most beautiful locations I've seen in Europe and while there you can tour the Salt Mine.

I’m confused on your timeframe and your answer will determine my response - do you have five days to get from Vienna to Munich, or five days total for Vienna and Salzburg?

Thanks Ken! I appreciate your thoughts!
Emily: we have five days to get from Vienna to Munich with a stop in Salzburg. This does not include time we are spending in Vienna. I have the front half of the trip planned. I'm now looking for advice on the back half.
