Business Trip to Salzburg in November - Where else should we visit?

We will be traveling from Los Angeles to Salzburg in early November for three nights, he has some business to handle while I sightsee most of the day. I would like to add another 4 nights and visit other surrounding areas. We then will fly back to Los Angeles.

After researching some areas of interest would be Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden and Vienna.

Would it be better to rent a car and drive to these places OR spend a couple of extra days in Salzburg and do Day Tours and then end our trip in Vienna for the last couple of days?

Any input would be appreciated.

When I visit Salzburg I like to stay in Grodig...it's not too far from the airport. The buses from Salzburg run there. The hotels are more of a traditional local style and fairly priced..there are some good places to eat etc. Best of all, it's not smack dab in the middle of Salzburg. Did I mention that there is a chocolate factory there?
A couple days in Salzburg should be enough....then head to Vienna. Stop in Leoben on the way for a Gosser tour and a (free) meal at the brewery bar.

We drove from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg after visiting Hitler's Eagle's Nest. We went in September so not sure how weather would affect these plans in November. The mountain and lake views are stunning from Eagle's Nest and Hitler's paranoia shows through.
We have also been to Vienna twice but I recommend Berchtesgaden as it is more unusual.

How fortunate that you will be in Salzburg in November. If it is late in the month, you may have the opportunity to see a Christmas market. There will be concerts available at Saint Peter’s Church in Saulsburg, as well as up in the HohenSalzburg fortress.

A choice for your 4 free days would be to go to Vienna. Their Christmas markets start 17 November and there are several of them. The other advantage to going to Vienna rather than Berchtesgarden or Hallstatt is that Vienna , being a much larger city, offers the opportunity to see many more sights. For example, you can see museums, attend concerts, see the Spanish riding school Lipizzaner stallions, and many other things. It would be far better for you to use the train rather than rent a car for whatever option you choose.

My advice would be to concentrate on Salzburg and Vienna. Take one of the express trains to go from Salzburg to Vienna. The fastest needs 2:23 hours, no way to make it in that time with a car.
By the way, Leoben is not on the way between Salzburg and Vienna.

How odd...it was when I drove through it on my way to Vienna from Salzburg...interesting. Maybe I imagined going there? Are you suggesting that there is no possible way to get to Leoben from Salzburg, from Leoben to Vienna?
I'm always amazed by the peanut gallery comments that get posted here.

The advice to take a train directly to Vienna is good...you will not need a car when you get there although it can be very convenient if you have one. Vienna is one of the easier places to drive and there are many places in the outskirts that are more easily accessed with a car..but it is definitely not necessary.

@Mack

Are you suggesting that there is no possible way to get to Leoben from Salzburg, from Leoben to Vienna?

Of course not. Let me put my statement more precisely:
Leoben is not on the direct , i.e. shortest, way between Salzburg and Vienna.

Salzburg is 180 miles west of Vienna, whereas Leoben is 100 miles south-west of Vienna. Going from Salzburg to Leoben, and from Leoben to Vienna is certainly possible, it is a drive about 230 miles. (Comparable to going from New York City to Boston and visiting Albany on the way.)

The drive from Salzburg to Leoben is scenic because you have to cross the Alpine divide.

I fully agree that the brewery in Leoben-Göß (Gösser Brauerei) is worth visiting, especially tasting its beer.
