Burgenland - Heritage

My husband and I are planning a trip for May 2026 which will include a side trip to Burgenland -- maybe overnight. We are 10 days in Tuscany, then by train Venice, Hallstatt, Vienna, -- where we will rent a car to see Burgenland. Then car back to Vienna, train to Salzburg and home from Munich. Actual days in each place has not been determined -- but roughly 10 days from Venice on.

My question is on Burgenland. Has anyone been there? My Great Grandparents Thuringer, Tschida are from the Pamhagen areas. My Great Grandpa Zecha is from the Vienna area (I believe). I am at a dead-end geneology wise and hoping to learn a little more while there. Any ideas for research or other? Thank you!

Why do you want to go back and forth, wasting valuable time?
E.g., driving from Venice to Pamhagen will be more than 7 hours (without any stops).

This schedule would be more reasonable:
Tuscany - Venice - Hallstatt - Vienna - Salzburg - Munich (all by train).
You can hire (and return) a car in Vienna and explore Burgenland from there.

Best would be flying home from Vienna, minimizing traveling even more:
Tuscany - Venice - Hallstatt - Salzburg - Vienna (all by train).

Thanks Rick Steve's Team. I edited my initial post -- in terms of which locations schedule. Best, Peggy

In terms of the route, it makes more sense to travel from Venice to Vienna (two direct trains per day) and then, after visiting Burgenland, take the route via Hallstatt, Salzburg to Munich.

Alternatively, you could also take the train from Venice to Graz, rent a car in Graz, drive through Burgenland to Vienna, and return the car there. Graz is a very beautiful city, and on the way to Burgenland, you could visit Riegersburg Castle and the Zotter chocolate factory.

Pamhagen is located very close to the Hungarian border, so it's best to check with the rental company to see if you can take the car to Hungary to drive around Lake Neusiedl and visit Sopron/Ödenburg, for example.

Burgenland is atypical for Austria in terms of landscape, for example with the steppe landscape around Lake Neusiedl.
The most important sights are Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Forchtenstein Castle, and Lake Neusiedl for swimming, water sports, or bird watching.

If you are looking for information about your ancestors, the parish is probably the best place to ask.

Or you can ask the local council if there is an archive of former residents.
