Budget Hotels Salzburg- Schallmoos?

Hi
I've found myself in a bit of a pickle and am hoping someone has some information to help me decide please. Due to life circumstances, I had delayed booking hotels in Salzburg for this November (23-27) and now realize I may have waited too long for things in my preferred area to still be within budget.

For that reason, I've started looking in the Schallmoos area, it says it's a 13 minute walk to Mirabell Palace. One of the hotels I'm looking at is the Dorint-City Hotel Salzburg, which is 650 CAD for 4 nights which is much cheaper than what I'm finding closer to city centre ($1000+).

My question is, if our goals are to see Salzburg and their Christmas markets, do a salt mine tour and Sound of Music tour, and see the little towns markets around the lake, will this location be a hindrance? Is there any easy public transportation near there that could get us closer with flexible schedules? Are taxis easy to get and are they particularly expensive?

Usually I'm a planning queen, but today I'm feeling like I may have dropped the ball and could really use some help please.

Thank you

PQ

Your hotel should be able to provide that information, Good luck, and hope it all works out.

I too was late to book in Salzburg last year due to a trip to Israel in early December being changed to a trip to Austrian Christmas markets. The Dorint was on my list of options, but I ended up going with a apartment just west of the Old Town that is more in the $1000 Canadian range for your dates.

Public transport in Salzburg is good and frequent. It looks like there are at least 2 bus stops within a block of the Dorint Hotel. It's about a 25 minute walk through what I would consider a safe area to get to the main Christmas market. You can also catch the 2 bus for a short ride to Mirabellplatz and then transfer to another bus for a short ride that can take you across the river to the Old Town proper (or enjoy the walk from Mirabellplatz). It looks like it is about a 10 minute bus ride or 15 minute walk to the the main train station (and bus station), which gives easy access to smaller towns.

You should be fine for the tours you mentioned.

Taxis are readily available, too. I used the FreeNow app in Salzburg to call taxis, and it worked well. I don't recall taxis being particularly expensive.

Thanks so much, Dave! This is exactly the kind of super helpful info I was looking for. I'm feeling much less overwhelmed now and like I have a better understanding of the city.

I really appreciate your help.

and if you have never stayed in a Dorint - even the compact City range - you are in for a treat. Hope you got the breakfast - Dorint breakfasts are to die for.

That said, I have never stayed at that Dorint but they are my go-to chain if I can get one. Some are a little loopy like the Ostsee experience near Worms where the bed is like a seaside wind break and the carpet looks like sand, but I have always enjoyed a Dorint.

Completely aside from your question, north of Frankfurt in the Taunus mountains is my all time favourite Dorint, Frankfurt Oberursel. A great small town too.

Interesting info, Nigel! I'd never even heard of the brand before now. Reviews for this location are a bit mixed, and I'm still considering a couple other options but I'll keep this in mind for sure. Thanks for the feedback!

I just looked up your hotel on booking and it is 428 euro for four nights. Your dates. Salzburg is very easy by taxi, bus, or foot.

Hi there,

Yes, that's the price I found previously as well, 428 Euro, 650 Canadian. I just wasn't sure if the location would be an issue, but now I know that it's not!

The bus to downtown is 25 feet from the door of this hotel. Great lounge as all Morel Ones. Take a taxi from the train station not that expensive.
