Hi,
Has anyone booked breakfast or tour at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg? Is it worth it?
Thanks.
Why would you want to have breakfast at, or even go to, Schloss Leopoldskron?

It is a SOM location.
By the way, now it is 5-star hotel and residence. It is amazing to stay there, if you can afford it.
Why would you want to go? Why would you ask? kdewing356 It sounds beautiful for breakfast and the gardens and the tour. Maybe one of the nicer things in Salzburg. But not sure what that has to do with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill?

It is a SOM location.
No it isn't. No part of SOM was shot at that location. The producers of SOM wanted to use Leopoldskron as the Von Trapp mansion, but it was being used as an international school at the time, and the school didn't want the interruption. So the outside shots of the "Von Trapp home" were shot at Schloss Frohnburg, 2km away, as the bird flies. All of the interior shots of the home were on a sound stage in Hollywood.
Schloss Frohnburg isn't even on a lake. The "lakeside" patio was a temporary set, an exact replica of the lakeside patio at Leopoldskron, built on the land next door to Leopoldskron. The set has been demolished. The Leopoldskron building and the actual patio never appeared in the movie.
The small gazebo was on the temporary set and was eventually moved to Hellbrunn "palace" where it can be seen today. The interior of that gazebo is not seen in the movie. All of the song and dance scenes from SOM were shot on a sound stage set in Hollywood (and you really thought that it just happened to start raining for real at the end of "you are sixteen going on seventeen").
I have a DVD of SOM with commentary by director/producer Robert Weiss. He explains all about the scenes and where they were shot.
