As the title states, I'll be flying to Vienna with a layover of a few hours in Amsterdam. Is there a customs requirement in Amsterdam prior to heading to Vienna? Worried about timing...

Immigration/passport control, for people, will be in AMS. Customs, for goods, will be after baggage claim in Vienna

At your departure airport you must insist that your baggage is checked through to the final destination.
A friend of my son flew two days ago from the states to Vienna, via Barcelona. He had to re-claim his baggage there, pass customs, and had to check-in his bags again. The layover was only one hour, and he missed his connecting flight.

If it is on one ticket luggage will be tagged through. If your son had to recheck his luggage in Barcelona he must have been traveling on two tickets. Who did the book with?

Alll was booked through United Airlines, but the flight from Barcelona to Vienna was Austrian Airlines.
