Hello:
In Austria and get the traffic announcements on radio. Seems to be a big traffic jam (up to an hour) at the Walserberg crossing. Noticed on a website they are adding another lane to speed things up. Curious if anyone crossed there recently? Thanks.
Thinking about crossing really early in the morning to try and avoid the biggest jam.
When I drove back to Munich from Salzburg last month I wanted to avoid the Vignette purchase just for the one day so stayed on back roads. When I joined the Autobahn just the German side of the border I had to drive a manned chicane and slow down to be inspected but that only added a matter of seconds.
Just take a back road.
If the worst comes to the worst, exit direction Bad Reichenhall a couple of kms. before Walserberg, drive two or three kms. then turn back direction Salzburg on a local road - passing at a former tiny border crossing under the Walserberg one. You may drive to Salzburg passing near the airport or re-enter the motorway (hopefully with your vignette on the screen) at Salzburg West or at the airport exit.
In the opposite direction (Austria to Germany) the road much shorter. Drive by the airport direction Wals/Lofer, as soon as you cross the border there is a big MÜNCHEN sign on the right and a short bypass in a forest will lead you directly into the motorway.
Thanks everyone.
According to the Bahn website all of the trains from Salzburg Saturday morning are expected to be on time, so it doesn't look like a widespread problem, like border crossing ID checks. Also, ViaMichelin does not show any current delays in that area.
It's only the Walserberg motorway checkpoint that is affected by those controls, not the trains; checks are done in the running train.
Hi: I am driving so the train is not the issue. I will look into the side roads.
