We're flying into Paris from the US but need to reach Salzburg that same day. I'm thinking about taking a plane from CDG to Munich and then a train or bus to Salzburg. Does this make sense? How much time should I allot for each transfer? Does 3 hours between landing in Paris seem like enough time before catching a booked flight to Munich? It looks like I need to get a bus at the Munich airport to take me to the bus station or train station in the city to get transportation to Salzburg. Does all this need to be booked in advance? Is there direct transportation from the Munich airport to Salzburg?

Depends on a lot of factors.
Checked bags?
What time of year? ( i.e. weather issues)
What airline are you contemplating for the ongoing flight?
Has the flight to Paris already been booked? If not, it would make more sense to fly to Munich vs Paris, if getting to Salzburg the same day is essential.
It appears flying from US to Amsterdam offers more choices for a direct flight onward to Salzburg.
Lufthansa offers flights from all over the U.S. into Munich. From Munich Hbf, it’s a 90-minute train ride to Salzburg.
If you’re flying into CDG. three hours may not be a safe timeframe to transfer to another flight.
It is a BIG risk to fly out of your arrival city within just a few hours. Your first flight could be cancelled or altered between now and then. Or you could arrive late. There could be delays going through Immigration. If you have checked bags, you need to exit the transit zone to check in your bags for the second flight and then go through security to get to your gate. Any of these could cause you to miss your second flight. And then you would have to buy a new ticket for the next available flight.
If you can't change your arrival airport to Munich, then give yourself at least 4 hours before your next flight. You can take either the S1 or S8 Sbahn commuter train from MUC to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station ) in under an hour. From there you can buy a ticket for the next train to Salzburg. Trains are frequent and take 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hrs.

You can actually do this with one ticket from MUC, take the S8 to Munich Ostbahnhof and get a train to Salzburg for there. With a Bayern Ticket, it is 32 EUR for the 1st person and 10 EUR for each additional person up to 5 total travelers. Use the regional train only from the Ostbahnhof with a departure every hour. Travel time from MUC to Salzburg is 2 hours and 18 minutes
Did you get a free ticket that you are flying to Paris in order to go to Salzburg? You could conceivably take a train from Paris to Salzburg in 8 to 9 hours. What time do you expect to land in Paris?
Thanks all. Our tour starts in Salzburg and ends in Chamonix. Paris seemed like a good roundtrip option and would be a nice finish. Maybe we need to arrive in Paris a day earlier or consider Amsterdam. The roundtrip cost is a factor. Thanks for the helpful responses.
You mention only round trip tickets. Have you already ruled out a multicity ticket? Almost all airlines have that option.
Yes, fly into Munich and out of Geneva. Are you talking about the My Way Alpine Tour?
As an example, assuming Portland Oregon, a round trip with 1 stop to CDG for Aug 4 to Aug 18 is $1127 on Delta. Same dates on Delta, into Munich and out of Geneva is $962. So it not only saves $165 per person, all the travel time and cost in between.
Salzburg also has an airport.
Are you trying to get to the first day meetup of the tour on the day you land in Europe?
Both Lufthansa and SAS fly from Paris to Salzburg. The flights are limited. Paris to Munich is very easy, 1.5 hour flight, multiple times a day, and cheap. From Munich it's also easy to take a train direct to Salzurg, but that's going to be a very long day. You would have done much better to book into Munich or Vienna, and out via Paris.
Paris to Munich is easy if you are starting from Paris. Not if you are starting from arriving from an overnight flight from North America.
Thanks so much! Multi-city options are new to me. I assumed they had to be from the same airports. This is great. Responding to the question about trying to get to Salzburg in time for the tour, we always give ourselves a few days beforehand in the starting city to recover and explore more.
I am glad you will consider a "multi-city" option, I e. Flying into one city and back from another. It can sometimes cost a bit more on the front end (although as demonstrated above, sometimes it even works out more cheaply!), but when you add in the cost, hassle and time of getting back to your starting point, the value becomes evident.
