What's the best option people have found?
We'd like to cut down travel time and also understand the rental car fees for this particular out of country route outweigh the benefit of the rental car. We are one couple traveling first week of august.

We are going the opposite way in July by train. Actually we are going to Hallstatt which is a little more difficult since it requires several changes. It is easy to pull up train schedules on the DB BAHN website.

The train website is reiseauskunft.bahn.de. There are many options one being a direct train leaving 14:12 and arriving at 18:31. Cost is 55 euros.

How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. This is always the best place to start with a transportation search. If your search turned up nothing suitable, then you might look for buses, but that's not the case on this route.
