I'm driving Vienna to Salzburg...is there a good town(s) to stop and enjoy the scenery and grab a meal? Or a certain route you would recommend beyond the direct one?
I don't know about lunches there, but I do know that about half way, close to Linz, the monastery in Sankt Florian is well worth a visit. Austrian Baroque at its best (or its worst, if you don't like the style).
Do the direct route, it looks shorter than it actually is. St. Florian is not a bad idea. My personal experience: I had once a good lunch at the gas stop near the Mondsee, with the lake landscape on my back, but I do not know if it would be good for you as when you are at Mondsee you are almost at Salzburg.
Since the A1 highway route is only estimated to take 3 hours driving time, I think you have time to stop for real sightseeing, in addition to lunch. Melk Abbey and surroundings are not far from the highway, nor is the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial.
I would stop at Gmunden and eat lunch at one of the many cafes on the promenade along the lake with gorgeous views.
Ps - it is a horrible drive, so breaking it up is a good idea.
Melk would be my answer... it's even visible from the Autobahn.
Hi,
If you want some good cheap Leberkäse, stop at Linz Hbf for lunch, located on the ground floor.
