We will have a car and want to get from the swiss alps to salzburg in one day.
Looks like there are several different ways to get there. We would like to see the scenery and stop along the way to picnic and enjoy the trip. Please offer your experiences of the best roads to take and any beautiful or interesting side trips along the way
It's a fairly long drive, so you may as well just take the most direct route. Head towards Luzern, via Zug or Schwyz, drive along the beautiful Walensee, cut through Liechtenstein to Feldkirch, take the E60 towards Innsbruck and continue towards Kufstein. At Würgel, you have multiple choices, all of which are probably equally time consuming. The most direct Autobahn route is to continue north to Rosenheim, then merge onto A8 towards Salzburg. However, traffic usually crawls between here and your goal (although on the plus side, your slow speed allows you to appreciate the amazing scenery). Your other options area all secondary roads through the Alps in Austria. I've only driven part of the way on some of them, and none are particularly fast.
Scenery is almost uniformally stunning along most of these routes, as it's almost all Alpine valleys or hinterland.
