Best route Salzburg - Venice?

Hello,
Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get from Salzburg to Venice? There are 6 adults, and a 16 month old, and we will have a car. We can ditch the car in Salzburg, or keep it until Venice. On that, we are flexible.

I know we will have to split up the trip, because it's going to be at least 7 hours now matter how we tackle it. One possibility we're considering is to go through Innsbruck, and another route would take us through Bled, Slovenia.

If anyone has any suggestions, or another alternate route, I'd appreciate the advice!

Many thanks,

Matt

My personal recommendation, if you are travelling directly and don't wnat to explore smaller areas, is to take the train to Villach followed by express bus to Venice. The bus has good reviews and the railway line from Salzburg to Villach has some glorious mountain scenery.

Definitely ditch the car in Salzburg - dropping off in another country is expensive.

If you do go via Bled the fastest trip from Bled to Venice is still 5:48 which somewhat defeats the purpose of splitting up the trip.

Rather than Innsbruck you might consider the much smaller Bressanone/Brixon - a lovely Southern Tyrol town. It is just about halfway 3.5 hrs from Salzburg & 3.37 to Venice.

The 8:12 train departure from Salzburg to Venice takes 6 hours instead of 7, if you're early risers.

Lake Bled is a lovely destination, especially if driving, but not a convenient train connection to Venice. The most direct trains double back to Villach, Austria, to connect with the bus. People without cars have been finding www.goopti.com and www.drd.si to be more direct transportation across the Slovanian-Italian border.

A 7-passenger van is usually not a cheap rental, so maybe the fee to drop in a different country will seem small (in comparison).

Thanks very much for the help, everyone.

As it stands right now, I'm leaning toward the Bressanone/Brixen option. I think that'll be the best fit for our itinerary. It looks like a lovely way to break up the trip. Traveling with our daughter (she'll be 21 months old in December) dictates that we'll definitely have to break up the journey. Three to fours hours each leg is doable.

I'm gonna dive in to it a planning session.

Thanks again.
