My Michelin maps of Austria and Switzerland have too much detail and are hard to use. What is the best road map that easily shows what road goes where?
Which scale of Michelin maps do you use? The 1:400000 Austria and Switzerland maps are really pretty good and not that detailed. The 1:200000 regional maps of Switzerland are indeed quite detailed and perhaps more confusing. I find other brands to be much less clear, and harder to find these days anyway, at least here.
I have the 1:400,000 maps. The darn things are big! In the past their detail has been helpful in finding interesting side trips, but what I'm looking for is more focus on roads, as we're going Bern-Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen-Innsbruck-Melk-Wien.
Check AAA. I got road maps for several countries for free.
How about a navigation system or Google Maps on your mobile phone?
While driving in Austria and Italy, I just used Google Maps. It was sufficient.
One additional benefit of using GM is that it tells you the altitude changes, at least in the laptop version.
