I have a keen interest in pastries and would love recommendations on the best places to visit in Innsbruck and Vienna.
Hi, I've been copying comments on Vienna pastries from the Forum pending an autumn visit- (Sorry I can't credit all the various people who helped us put this list together, but I know Emily was very kind and detailed in some commentaries.)
Instead of Cafe Central, Demel or Sacher, try - Kaffee Alt Wien, Prueckel or Gerstner. Cafe Gerstner has the most divine sour cherry strudel (apricot is also good). Our local guide told us to be SURE to go to the third floor, not the second floor. The place was divine--really elegant and beautiful. A historic cafe, in business for 170 years, a place that used to provide its products to the Imperial Court.
Great apple strudel Café Korb, Brandstätte 7-9 (close to St. Stephen’s)
Oberlaa also offers a three course lunch special, and cakes and pastries are superior.

https://www.oberlaa-wien.at/?lang=en “Go to the place in the city, i.e. 1st borough, 5 minutes from St. Stephen's cathedral. After having finished your coffee and pastries, consider a take-away from the counter on the ground floor. They have more than 30 variants of hand-made chocolates. For travelers there are pre-packaged selections in different sizes.”
Café Diglas on Fleischmarkt, they had different pastries every day. We had planned on trying a different place for breakfast every morning, but we ended up going there every day, we liked their "Vienna Breakfast".
Who doesn't have a keen interest in pastries ;)?
For the best cakes, pastries and baked goods in Vienna (I'm expanding it beyond just pastries), I suggest the following:
- PaRémi - In the first district. Absolutely divine French patisserie.
- Creme de la Creme - On the best foodie street in Vienna you'll find this exquisite French patisserie.
- Freyja - The very best croissants.
- Aehrnst - The other very best croissants (only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - there is a line).
- Gerstner - The very best strudel (sit at the top floor with the large, ornate rooms - keep walking up the stairs).
- Peti Pari - On another very cute street off of the main shopping street of Mariahilferstrasse.
- Oberlaa - many locations, but I like the one on Neuer Markt in the first district.
- Aida - any branch is a retro experience blooming in pink, but I like the one on Wollzeile.
- Vollpension - Grandmas work here producing baked goods that would otherwise be lost to time. Very popular.
- Groissböck Cafe - Voted nearly every year as having the best Krapfen (traditional apricot jam filled donuts).
If you want to visit a traditional coffeehouse with a nice selection of cakes, strudels and other baked goods, I recommend Sperl for their strudel, Demel for their Kaiserschmarrn (from the takeaway window), #5 above, Landtmann for their cakes and kaiserschmarrn, and Cafe Prückel for a nice dessert case.
