Best driving route from Passau to Salzburg

I’m driving with my wife in the end of June from Passau, Germany to Salzburg, Austria, and I’m wondering what is the most interesting route to take. I see on the map there’s a couple of ways to go and I’m wondering if one is prettier or has an interesting stop on the way with good restaurant options, etc.

Later, I’ll be driving from Salzburg on to Munich, and have the same question. Any advice is appreciated.

It's a little out of your way to Salzburg, but a stop in Burghausen. Its famous for the longest castle in the world. Also a longer drive, but on secondary roads to Munich you might stop in Traunstein and/or Prien am Chiemsee. The Autobahn between Salzburg and Munich is famous for traffic and Stau. I get up early to drive it on Sunday mornings. No need for an Austrian Vignette if you stick to secondary roads.

Any route along the rivers is better/best for views. Inland will be much farmland. Along the river, about two-thirds of the journey, is a cool castle in Tittmoning as well as the one in Burghausen.
