Best district to stay in Vienna

Hi:
I am traveling to Vienna in early May/2015. I would like to know which district is handy to stay in for taking in the sites.
I am planning to rent a flat for 2 ngts before I meet up with a friend at a hotel that she has booked for our 3 nights together in Vienna. I don't need recommendations on places to stay - just the optimum district for sightseeing, preferably walking. I have found some affordable flats in the following districts - 1040, 1050, 1060 & 1070. The hotel that I will be moving to is in 1030.
Thanks for any info that anyone can provide - appreciated,

The third digit in the postcode is the District number in Vienna. 1 is the original centre within the Ring (the set of boulevards that follow the former walls), and 2-9 are around the centre. Any districts below ten will be central enough to be good for sights.

The First District (1010) is the historic center and where the vast majority of sights are concentrated.

Keep in mind that Vienna is an exceptionally small and compact capital with excellent public transportation. Getting into the center from district 2-9 with public transport will take only minutes. By foot, depending on the exact location, you can reach the center in likely 10-20 minutes.

For the flats you have found, keep in mind that every district has its nicer/quieter areas, so maybe you want to share the exact addresses so that you can be given the best advice. Of the 4 districts you have listed, the 7th is the most hip/cool/best concentration of unique shops and restaurants. The 4th is fine, but be wary of areas near the Guertel. The 5th, not my top choice, not much interesting. The 6th would be my second choice, but there are some grubby areas here, so an address would be helpful.

I am guessing that you are staying at the Riding School Hotel in the 3rd?

You'd get more advice if you would go by neighborhoods instead of zip codes. Transposing info into zip codes takes more time than most people are willing to put into your answer.

I'd suggest you check the maps of the metro (subway) and try to stay close to a station. Or, stay in the neighborhood where you and your friend will be staying.

If interested, I do know a bed and breakfast 50' from the front door of a subway station 1 stop outside of "the Ring". We and Rick Steves have stayed many times with them, and the current price is 79 Euros.

Hi,

The zip code of 1070 is the one where I always stay, most nights in a hotel, a couple of nights in an independent hostel.

Actually it is easier for locals to go by the postal codes as it is simple to determine the districts.

1040 = 4th District
1050 = 5th District
1060 = 6th District
1070 = 7th District
1220 = 22nd District

You just take the two "inside" numbers and that represents the district you are talking about. If people on here started referring to the 4th District as Wieden, then I can promise you that confusion would ensue.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Yes, I am staying at the Marriott in the 3rd when I meet up with my friend, which is a very generous treat on my friend's part, as I would never be able to afford such luxury. As much as I appreciate everyone who has recommended places to stay, to make a long story short, I have a voucher from airbnb that I wish to use while in Vienna, so am limited to their listings. As the voucher expires in Sept/2015, I think Vienna is the opportune time to use it. That being said, I have only found 1 apt in the 1st District that I can afford, even using the voucher. It, apparently, is right above Figlmüller's Restaurant, which I have read rave reviews about (but doesn't mean it's a great flat). It seems to have a couple quirks, but hey, it's old & in Vienna! My budget is quite limited - I'm hoping not to spend no more than $70 Cdn per ngt, after I apply I my $75 voucher. From reading up on districts, I have come to the conclusion that I probably want to be in either the 1st or 7th. So, I have one in the 1st that could be, & one in the 7th that could be. Seems like they kind of run neck in neck. I'm pasting in the links for the two different places & if anyone wishes to critique, I'm more than happy to have your opinion & would appreciate same: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/748227 - this is the 1 in the 1st, very modestly furnished, but large. I only plan to sleep there for 2 ngts, not move in, nor cook, except perhaps a cup of coffee & a fridge to put milk in. This is the one in the 7th: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/3824197
Thanks again to everyone - so appreciated!

@Judy,
He's always recommending KT Boardinghouse over in the Westbahnhof area.

Actually K&T Boardinghouse is what we recommend too -- nice owner, easy walk to the Ring. They no longer run the one with the 90 stairs so much more accessible than before.

Gail - This reply is quite late, but if it is helpful, I would say that the location in the 1st is hard to beat. I do like the 7th, but the sights you want to see would be much more convenient from the 1st. When you are in the 3rd, you will get a feel of a different neighborhood, which happens to be mine. I recommend that you make a quick trip to the Hundertwasserhaus and be sure to explore the Stadtpark as you walk into town. The lilacs will also be in their full glory in May, so a trip to St. Marx Cemetery is a must - it is full of lilacs and also the resting place of Mozart. St. Marx is just a few tram stops away from the Riding School Hotel (which is a Renaissance, by the way, not a Marriott; they have great breakfast).

Cannot go wrong with KT Boardinghouse, which is located right near a U station.
