Best 1 day tour from Salsburg to Hallstatt?

You probably have to look for a tour that specifically says they go to the ice caves. The ice caves are not in Hallstatt. They are at the end of a chain of several Seilbahns (cable cars) that start in Obertraun, which is around the bottom end of the lake from Hallstatt. Obertraun is actually the next station down on the train that stops across the lake from Hallstatt (at the Hallstatt Bahnhof).

If a tour takes the time to go up to the ice caves, I don't think there would be much time left for Hallstatt.

it's not a day trip.

spend the night in Hallstatt - it isn't time consuming but it's worth the trip - and yes the ice caves are wondrous, your boys will love it!

You could try Bob's Special Tours in Salzburg. Have a look at their website to see if that might work for you. I agree with a previous reply that spending at least one night in Hallstatt would be worthwhile.
