We are tight on time and driving Bergenz to Mittenwald. We can either drive the Inn River Valley to Innsbruck, or drive through southern Germany. Both take about the same amount of time on google maps. Is one route much better than the other in terms of scenery or stops. We generally stay in places for 3 nights and try not to drag out travel because we have teens. Thanks for suggestions
What time of year? I personally would take the Austria route and skip the Austrian Autobahns and Mout (toll) and take the secondary roads, but that will take a little longer. Anything you want see along the route/s?
Remember that the Arlberg highway tunnel will be closed from April 15th to November 22nd, 2024, so in that period the Austrian route will involve driving the pass - the German route will have more traffic.
Yikes. That sounds less fun. Thanks for the info. Maybe we will just take the train instead and avoid traffic.
I vacation and drive my manual BMW Convertable every Spring/Summer in Austria. The only time I drive the Autobahns is when I take my ebikes on the hitch (less stress on the systems). Driving the secondary roads is what I do. I see the scenery, not walled in with Lärmschutz (noise control walls) and multiple tunnels on the toll Autobahns. It's part of the trip. If you want scenery than get scenery. If you want speed than take the Autobahns.
There was a route I saw that took you near Füssen where you could detour to see Neuschwanstein Castle and continue on to Lermoos. Stop in Lemroos at the Post Hotel for a fantastic view of the Zugspitz and Sonnenspitz from the terrace there.
I'm in Ehrwald for a Winter vacation. Fantastic blue skies. Drove the VW in the snow.
