Berchtesgaden or St. Wolfgang

Hello,

We will be in Salzburg in December for three days including the arrival day. I am thinking of doing a day trip to either Berchtesgaden or St. Wolfgang (three villages). My original choice was Berchtesgaden, but after reading on this forum, and also considering the timing (winter),now I am thinking maybe St. Wolfgang is a better choice? There will be no boat tour at Königssee so if going to Berchtesgaden, the choices will be documentation center, salt-mine and Königssee (w/o boat tour). Christmas Markets will be the theme for the three villages.

I am leaning towards the three villages. What do you think?

Thank you for your advice.

BTW, I think a show at Marionette theatre in Salzburg would be fun to watch, but unfortunately it is not open during our days of stay.

I was planning on doing the bus to boat on Wolfgangsee. We've been to Salzburg 3 times before so have seen the main sights. We've done a sound of music tour before, but I kind of wanted to see some of it again including the church in Mondsee. We'll also spend 3 nights. I just recently found a tour through Eidelweiss Tours that does both! It combines some SOM sights with Christmas Markets at St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen.

Hi Jill,
Thank you for the information. I checked out the eldelweiss tours website. Is this the one you were referring to?
https://www.edelweisstourssalzburg.com/tours/salzburg-winter-tours/christmas-markets-tour-hallstatt-from-salzburg
We also want to do a SOM tour so this seems perfect and it includes Hallstatt which is a plus. The only reservations I have are I feel visiting all these places within 8 hours including transporting time is a little rush. Plus I want to take the Christmas train.
But thanks again for the idea. I will think about it.

Jean, The tour I am signed up for is the Salzkammergut Christmas Market tour and famous movie locations. We've been to Hallstatt a few times also.

Thanks for the warning Paul. We'll actually be there over a weekend so not a problem (except for the hotel prices! :)

Hi Paul-Thank you for the reminder. I did check the days for the three villages. We will be there on a Thursday.

I got the Königssee boat info from Rick Steve's Germany book but i thought I also saw the same info somewhere on the internet. Thank you for the boat timetable. Now I will start to debate again whether to visit Berchtesgaden or St. Wolfgang.

Jill,
I was only able to find this one HALLSTATT + SALZKAMMERGUT and WORLD FAMOUS MOVIE LOCATIONS, but it doesn't include St. Wolfgang district Christmas Markets.
We probably will just do the three villages by ourselves, but I reserve the right to change my mind. Thanks again for the info.

jeansn6 - Did you see the lengthy post I wrote up recently about planning for the Wolfgangsee Christmas markets?

Emily-Yes I have, and that is what inspired me to look into the trip to the St. Wolfgang area. Your post was very actionable. Thank you for your contribution to the forum.

So sad we can only do one day trip, I have to decide whether to go to St. Wolfgang or Berchtesgaden.

Or perhaps we can an organized tour to combine SOM and Berchtesgaden; and then do a day trip to St. Wolfgang. We can leave Salzburg in the afternoon for Munich. That will give us two half days for Salzburg. Is that enough? if not, I will choose either St. Wolfgang or Berchtesgaden.
Thanks!

I also posted about my daytrip from Salzburg to the Wolfgangsee, loved it and not hard to do.

Hi phred-Yes I've read your trip report. Which stop did you get off for St. Gilgen? St.Gilgen Busbahnhof (Raiffeisenplatz)?
Did you feel Strobl was worth to stop by?
Thanks!

Yes got off at the St Gilgen bus "station" stop which is a short walk to the ferry dock (Google maps can show you). As I mentioned it's really just a shelter with a WC, I believe there are services nearby.

I thought Strobl seemed like a nice town (small city?), we walked through it on the way to the bus station (which has a cafe).
