Berchtesgaden

Hello, we will be driving from Fussen area to Hallstatt, then Salzburg. Do you recommend stopping by Berchtesgaden on the way to Hallstatt? We know it’ll be a long day. We’re only interested in the Eagle’s Nest tour there. Or should we just visit Berchtesgaden while at Salzburg as base? Thank you for the kind advice.

Do you mean that you would go to Hallstatt and Berchtesgaden in one day, ending in Salzburg? If yes, then that is too much for one day.

When are you traveling? Kehlsteinhaus (the "Nest") is not open in the winter (Oct. thru May) due to weather and a steep access road.

If you are driving, you can't go all the way to the Nest. The road up to it is a one lane private road for the special buses only, closed to all other traffic. You park at the Busbahnhof in Obersalzberg, buy a ticket there, and take one of the special buses up to the Nest.

I've spent seven full days (8 nights in Berchtesgaden, and three night in Freilassing and commuted down for 2 days) in four trips since 2000.

I've spent an evening and one full day in Salzburg. I visited mostly SOM sites without an overpriced tour. That was enough for me, but I love Berchtesgaden and keep going back.

Apart from the logistics issues with going to the Eagle's Nest as already noted, it's
probably 4 hours from Fussen to Hallstatt and 1.5-2 hours from Hallstatt to Salzburg.
That leaves you with about 2-3 hours to see Hallstatt on a regular day, and no time
at all for Berchtesgaden. And assumes you don't stop at all along the way, which
seems like a bad assumption.

And, you can easily take the public bus from downtown Salzburg to the bus station
in Berchtesgaden, transfer to the bus that goes to the Documentation Center (which
you should really not miss if you are going to be there) and then take the special bus
up to Kelsteinhaus.

Really, the Eagles Nest is just a restaurant with hiking paths and nice views. The
Documentation Center is the place to immerse in the history and human tragedy.
Some of the bunkers are open to walk through as well.

Hello, thanks for all the advice.

We will be going mid May, so B will be open. I checked their website.
We have 2 nights in Hallstattt, then a few nights in Salzburg.

My thought was from Fussen, it’s 3 hr drive to B, spend a few hours in B, then 1.5 hr to Hallstatt, and spend 2 nights in Hallstatt. So done with B by then. Then we go to Salzburg for a few days. With this, we won’t need to have 1 day taken out of our Salzburg time, to visit B.
Any other advice is appreciated. Thank you.
