Belvedere in Vienna - quick clarification

Hi all,

I apologize for the dumb question, but wanted to make sure I have it correct. I was looking at the Museum of Art History and Natural History Museum Vienna and for whatever reason I thought that these two places were in/the same as Upper and Lower Belvedere.

I am confused because the Museum of Art history is said to have the Klimt collection, but then I see that Upper Belvedere has Klimt's "Kiss", correct?

We're going to Schonbrunn, so I'm not hip to add another palace, but would very much like to see Klimt's Kiss.

Thanks for setting me straight!

The major Klimt painting collection is in the Upper Belvedere , the Lower is usually given over to temporary exhibitions . There is also an important Klimt display at The Leopold . The Art History Museum ( Kunsthistoriches ) has a massive collection of art through the ages , but if you stand at the top of the main stairs and look across to the gallery entrances, the decorative paintings in the Spandrels are early works of Klimt , when he was making his initial impact on the art world in Vienna .

In addition to other museums already mentioned, there's also some Klimt at the Wien Museum at Karlsplatz and also the MAK Museum of Applied Arts, but for quantity your best bets are the Belvedere and the Leopold. I made a bit of a Klimt and Third Man pilgrimage in 2014 and I'm returning for more in a couple of weeks.

The Upper Belvedere is the permanent collection of Austrian art, and the Lower Belvedere is temporary exhibitions plus the OTT architecture of the place itself.

The Natural History Museum is opposite the Kunsthistorisches Museum in a building designed to match it.

Personally I'd skip Schonbrunn and just go the the Belvedere. The Belvedere is a fabulous palace in its own right. Plus it has an impressive collection of paintings. Plus it has Klimpt/Secessionist art that about equals the Secessionist museum. So for me instead of doing Schonnbrunn and the Secessionist museum and some other art museum I'm happy enough just to go to the Belvedere and spend more time soaking in the Viennese locals just living life (by going to one of the fancy historic public swimming pools for instance).

But of course we are all different in what makes us satisfied travelers! Have fun!

Thanks hlaufenberg!

My immediate reaction to your comment was denial. BUT! I regularly recommend people skip the Louvre in Paris for Musee D'Orsay, so I understand your recommendation! Thanks!!

Totally loved the The Art History Museum ( Kunsthistoriches ) -- amazing musuem not to be missed and a wonderful cafe in the museum where I went for a very good lunch. I spent most of the day in the museum and did not see it all.

I enjoyed the Belvedere Palace and the palace gardens, again spent most of the day there too! I stayed longer than most people because I enjoyed the gardens and seeing all the grounds and spent time going into each room to see every painting. Had a nice lunch in their cafe at the palace too. Not as amazing as the Kunsthistoriches but good enough. I did not go to the Lower Belvedere as I did not care for the art exhibit they were having at the time. But the Belvedere Palace is lovely, no furniture, just paintings and of course some key works by Kimt including the Kiss.

I spent 4 extra days in Vienna after the GAS tour and did not have the time to go to the Schonbrunn which I was very disppointed about so that is on top of my list should I return to Vienna. I did have friends from the tour and they spent a lot of time seeing the gardens but did not have time to see the inside of the palace. It really is a whole day at the Schonbrunn if you go.

Vienna is a lovely city, easy to get around, very good trams and metro system. Lots of concerts, opera to see and just wonderful museums and cafes.

I agree with you completely, I also feel you should skip the Lourve and see the D'Orsay if you don't have time for both when in Paris!
Have a great time.
