This was probably asked and answered many times, so sorry but is Vienna Woods still a walkable place to "experience" the Beethoven walking area? ty
Yes , ( and I've never seen this query arise !! } Here is a google map , Find Beethovengang and Zahnradbahnstrasse ( they are parallel to one another ) In between , if you enlarge the map , you will find the Schreiberbach ( writer's brook ) While I can't provide a historically definitive answer , it is highly likely that this is the area that Beethoven describes in the second movement of the Sixth Symphony ( Scene by the Brook ) In the area is Probusgasse 6 , now the Beethoven Museum where Beethoven lived for a time . St Michael's Church is around the corner. It was here that Beethoven realized the worsening deterioration of his hearing. Looking out of the window of his room , he saw the church bells tolling , but could not hear them . As I understand this , it was that experience that prompted his writing of The Heiligenstadt Testament . He spent considerable time in the area in and around Grinzing , wandering in The Wienerwald . While he is buried in The Zentralfriedhof , the cemetery in Grinzing is the resting place of Gustav Mahler . As well , his wife Alma is quite near his grave ,interred with her daughter Manon , by her lover Walter Gropius , The Bauhaus architect . Almost forgot some directions - 1) you take the # D tram from the Ring ( Borse stop ) to the terminus at Beethovengang and then walk west along Zahnradbahnstrasse to Eroicagasse . turn right and return to Beethovengang and continue along the brook to the west . Alternatively , from the lower tram stop at Schottentor ,you can take the #37 tram to the end at Hohe Warte and then walk down the hill to St Michael's . The museum is a very short walk from there From the museum , if you turn right along Probusgasse , walking east to the end ( very short distance ) you will see Mayer am Pfarrplatz , an Inn where Beethoven also stayed in the area ,and a classic Viennese Heuriger . While not common in this day and age , if you're lucky , you might encounter some Schrammelmusik in one of the areas Heurigen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schrammelmusik https://youtu.be/V6oYfd9-2o0?si=s-qckGkB8dTy0BOFle A sample https://youtu.be/V6oYfd9-2o0?si=s-qckGkB8dTy0BOF
TY Steven for all the many details. I'm copying these so I have it for the future. Thinking about it adds another level of wonder. I did the Central Cemetery and sat on the ground @ his burial site, as did others, for some contemplation being so close to his remains. Walking thru the Pasqualati House was also very humbling.
Over the last few summers, I've been searching and going to places throughout greater Vienna in search of Beethoven traces.
Located within Vienna's 19th district of Döbling is the former village now city-neighbourhood of Heiligenstadt, where Beethoven spent much of his time. The following are examples of his traces in Heiligenstadt; a person in good health and fitness can cover them all in a single day.
- Beethoven bust (outside)
- Beethoven Museum
- Beethovengang
- Beethovenruhe
- Greinerhaus
- Grillparzer-Haus
- Heiligenstädter Park
- Mayer am Pfarrplatz
I've written and mapped out their locations. If this is of interest, please message me, and I'll forward you the long non-abbreviated URL.
TY HL. Your interest in Beethoven shows in your efforts. I will message you for the URL, etc. TY again.
gritz spend as much time as you can on HL's website ,it is absolutely terrific !!
Ty steven. I will for sure.
