My partner and I will be spending two, possibly three days in the Central and South Burgenland region as part of a family heritage trip (my great grandfather was originally from Wolfau), and I am looking for recommendations for a city that we can use as a base to explore and get to know that part of Austria. We will have a rental car, so any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This area is called Thermenland (land of subterranean hot springs). At several places wells had been drilled to make use of the hot mineral water for spas and wellness resorts, called Therme. If you search for that term, you will find a lot of offerings, even in the vicinity of Wolfau.
You might consider such a spa as your base for exploring the area.
As mentioned above, this area is well known in Austria for thermal springs. Stegersbach is the closest and known for high end hotels. We love the Falkensteiner chain. As an aside, my grandfather is from nearby Fuerstenfeld.
