Baggage on EC train between Munich and Innsbruck

How do you store baggage on this train? I appears that you either store it in a common baggage area at the end of the car or at your seat but I am not certain about this fine point. I have made a reservation and opted for the higher class of service with more room.

Any answers would be über—helpful.

Smaller bags go on the shelf above the windows, even smaller bags beside your feet, and larger bags at the baggage area. There is usually plenty of room for luggage in both 2nd and 1st class.

They usually have racks within eyesight of you that the baggage can go into. Chances are the train will not be very crowded.

It's just a couple of hours' ride from Muchen to Innsbruck--one of the most beautiful cities anywhere. I used to live there while in college 52 years ago.

On a similar Salzburg-Munich run there was a big empty space in each car and that's where everyone piled their bags. And there were a lot. I happened to be sitting near mine so I just kept craning my neck to watch them.

There is no need to crane your neck all the time. Luggage thieves are not after your dirty laundry.

There is much more in luggage these days than laundry

Carry a simple bike lock. You can then secure your bags via one or more handles to the rack. Yes, a detremined thief could cut through the straps, but this isn't going to happen in Austria.

BTW, you can also use this lock in the airport, train station or at a cafe to secure your luggage. No need to keep a super close eye on your bags. I also keep my TSA lock on my bag and store nothing in an outside pocket when traveling. Yes, overkill on security, but I've never had a problem.

If you lock your luggage to the rack you may end up getting in a discussion with the conductor.

Really, the chances of your luggage being stolen at the airport by the luggage handlers is higher than it being stolen when on a train in Austria. Again, thieves do not want your dirty laundry. It is your hand bag, or your day pack, where you have your valuables, that you should keep an eye on.

Here’s a great resource, with pictures of what to expect. If you reserve your seat, the seating map will show you where the luggage racks are. Some are at the end of the car, others are in the middle. There will be racks above the seats that hold smaller bags like duffle bags and backpacks. Sometimes they are tall enough for carry on size bags.
