Bad Gastein suggestions?

Has anyone here spent any time in Bad Gastein in summer, and might you suggest where to stay?

It sounds like some nice resorts lie just outside the "town" - ca/ 15 minutes walk. Also, I wonder if there's a mountain refuge/hut with a restaurant somewhere up near the Stubnerkogel or Kreuzkogel that are better for scenery and getting away-from-it-all?

Hello... Sorry for the late reply. We spent a week in Bad Gastein and stayed at the Ferienclub Bellevue (Mondi) and had zero complaints and it is in the town. We were there in May and many of the restaurants and shops were closed but still enjoyed it immensely. The view was spectacular and Bad Gastein is a nice, small town so you can walk anywhere. We did a few hikes beginning at Stubnerkogel but there are so many options for hiking trails there you could never be bored. Our favorite was close by - Reedsee. It is a challenging hike (steep) but worth every step. If you want more info on the hikes let me know and I will dig out the info - we went a few years ago. We were amazed at the entire area and made a trip - to Zell Am See to go hang gliding as well. I am more than happy to share more info if you are interested...

Forgot to add.... realizing everyone is different and has different ideas/needs for vacations.. we just arrived home from Germany and Austria and spent time in the far west Austria/Germany border and will have to say the Bad Gastein area is our favorite ! You can't go wrong there if you enjoy hiking and peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in Bad Gastein. We are only passing through and spending one night there, at least this trip. We're staying at Hotel Haus Hirt, which offered a nice spa and restaurant options. We should arrive early enough to have the afternoon and evening for a nice walk, but maybe not proper hiking.
