bad gastein

Great spa town, but I'm not certain it warrants three nights. Will you have a rental car or are you traveling via train? If you are looking for the spa experience with some outdoor hiking, etc., then you will be fine here. Otherwise, without the spa/thermal baths, I think you can do better if the point is to sightsee. Consider going a bit further west to Zell am See. I think this is prettier and has a wider variety of sites and activities. But this is just my opinion. I've only considered Bad Gastein a day trip.

We once had a day trip from Salzburg; Bad Gastein is in a nice setting, the water falls in the middle of the town being dramatic, but it looks like it has seen better times and several buildings - including one of the main hotels - looked abandoned. The whole of Austria being so tidy, it did not give a positive impression to us.

thanks for the replies, I cancelled out nites in bad gasteirn, and booked in zell am see, seems like a much better place to hang out for a couple days. nick from santa cruz
