Austrian get-away

We are planning an early July trip to Prague and Vienna. We would like to spend our second week in a smaller town - ideally close to hiking and a lake. We will not have a car, so will need access to bus/train. Any suggestions? Thank you.

We cross country skied in the PillerseeTal, AT. The largest of five villages, Fieberbrunn is a 2+ hour regional train ride away from Salzburg. Discount group train travel on regional trains: http://www.oebb.at/en/angebote-ermaessigungen/einfach-raus-ticket

The five PillerseeTal villages are served by local bus and was free. No car needed.

In PillerseeTal you don't necessarily have to tackle high alpine
routes, you can also hike on the short routes, which still offer
plenty of variety. Challenging summit tours for ambitious mountain
climbers and hikers are also available.

In the PillerseeTal, even your car can go on holiday! Because with the
great offers of bus and train, you can travel the Kitzbühel Alps in an
uncomplicated and environmentally friendly way. With your valid guest
card from the PillerseeTal you have the buses between Hochfilzen and
Waidring as well as all commuter trains (except IC, EC and RailJet)
between Hochfilzen and Wörgl (Kirchbichl) included!

I would suggest the Wolfgang See area, which has many lakes, great hiking, etc. We prefer to stay in St. Gilgen.

Last May, I was quite taken with the looks of the Traunsee when we passed by it on the train. Maybe someone here can suggest a spot on that lake (Ebensee?). We were headed to Bad Ischl and Hallstatt; of course the latter is also a beautiful spot on a lake.

Thank you, Janet. I will look at that area. It is so nice to hear from people who have been there.

Maybe look into Pertisau on the Achensee. No old town, but a nice recreation area with many hotels and apartments and very few US tourists. Easy hike from the top of the Rofanbahn to the Dalfaz Alm with good views of the Achensee, boat trips on the Achensee, Achenseebahn steam train, golf course in Pertisau, Karwendel-Bergbahn, Nature reserve Karwendeltäler etc. I have spent three long weekends in this area in summer and winter to include one with family visiting from the US, and plan to go back...
