Austria we are looking for a short mountain view of Austria---we will end up in Prague.

1- Would it be best to start in Innsbruck, then to Alpbach---Kufstein---Salzburg? OR
2- Start in Salzburg to St Wolfgang to Hallstatt?
I hate to miss Innsbruck, But then again I really want to ride the cog train in St Wolfgang.
We just have 3 days in October

Can't comment on #1 because I've never been to Alpbach or Kufstein, but you can't go wrong with #2. I'd do 2 nights in Saltzburg, a few hours in St. Wolfgang on the way to Hallstatt, and one night in Hallstatt, staying at the lovely Hotel Gruner Baum. Hallstatt is such a beautiful place, with a relaxed atmosphere. You'll find plenty to do on your one day visit.

Where are you coming from? The Alps cover about 60% of Austrian territory, so there's plenty of options throughout the country.

We actually live in Germany right now. We will be coming from Dresden, and continuing to Prague. We only have three full days in Austria. We are interested in high alps scenery. We will need to get to Salzburg on the third day to catch a night train or bus to Prague. Thanks.

Maybe look into the Waidring Steinplatte Kaisergebirge area or farther to the west in the Zillertal area. Basically near Kufstein. I would watch the weather closely and if possible make a last minute decision based on weather. Even with bad weather on the mountain tops sometimes you can be above it and have blue skies. October will be reaching into the off season and many lifts may not be running. This may make your decision easier. Check the webcams...

For high alpine scenery, there's no question for me, I'd go with Innsbruck and the area. Take the Nordkettenbahn trip. October is a wonderful time to be in the alps. We've done many October trips to the Austrian alps. We stayed 18 nights during 5 trips to the area outside Innsbruck at the Gashof Badl in Hall in Tirol. We are headed back later this year.

Pictures of our winter 2010 Nordkettenbahn trip. We went to the middle, Seegrube" station. The Hafelekar station, the top station, is further above this.
